Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan: 2027 cohort
The Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan pays $81,000 a year for two years of AI driven science. Apply by November 23, 2026.
The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan is taking applications for its 2027 cohort. The program is run by the Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS) and funded by Schmidt Sciences. It supports postdocs who apply AI methods to research questions in science and engineering.
The fellowship lasts two years. The program pays a salary of $81,000 a year (the 2026 to 2027 rate) plus benefits, and covers travel to annual Schmidt Sciences events. Two faculty mentors pay the research costs, such as computing, conference travel, publication fees and visa fees.
The work must use AI in biological and biomedical science, earth and environmental science, engineering, or physical science and mathematics. Research that aims to improve disease diagnosis, prevention or treatment is out of scope. AI is defined broadly and includes machine learning, robotics, Bayesian inference and simulation.
Your PhD must be received after September 1, 2022 and conferred before the start date in August or September 2027. It can be in any field. You must not have held a tenure track faculty post. The program is open to international applicants. You need two University of Michigan faculty mentors: one AI Mentor and one Science Mentor.
Apply through the InfoReady portal by 11:59 pm EST on November 23, 2026. The package includes a CV, a two page research statement, a development plan, a responsible AI statement, three papers, a letter from each mentor and two or three references. Offers start in February 2027. Fellows spend at least half their time in person at the MIDAS postdoc office in Ann Arbor.
