AFFINE Alignment Seminar Winter 2027 in Portugal

The AFFINE Alignment Seminar is a free four week AI alignment residency in Portugal in January 2027, with a $1,000 stipend. Apply by November 22, 2026.

The AFFINE Alignment Seminar is taking applications for its Winter 2027 round. It is a full time residency in Lagos, in southern Portugal. The core program runs from January 4 to January 29, 2027, and there are 35 places.

Attendance is free. Accommodation, travel and catering are covered, and participants receive a $1,000 stipend. Mentors include Abram Demski, Kaarel Hänni, Tushita Jha, Jonas Hallgren, Mateusz Bagiński, Chris Pang, Cole Wyeth and Ashe Vazquez Nuñez. An online reading group starts two weeks before the seminar.

The seminar works on the philosophical foundations of AI alignment, including Agent Foundations research. Participants do not get a fixed project or a single assigned mentor. The weeks combine workshops, lectures, debates, peer tutoring and one to one talks with mentors, with Wednesdays run as an unconference.

The organizers ask for solid mathematical footing and real philosophical curiosity. You do not need a PhD or a prestigious reference. They say experience in biology, writing, cryptography, philosophy, linguistics, economics and anthropology can all be useful.

To apply, fill in the application form by November 22, 2026. The organizers say the earlier, the better. Two more stages follow: a few essay style questions and an interview. The first AFFINE seminar took place in May 2026.
