HIIG Impact AI Fellowship 2027 in Berlin
Ten week HIIG fellowship to assess the impact of AI projects for sustainability and the public interest, with a €5,000 stipend. Apply by 15 January 2027.
The HIIG Impact AI Fellowship 2027 is a ten week programme at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin. Fellows learn HIIG's Impact AI Method and carry out a full impact assessment of one AI project, with a focus on AI for sustainability and the public interest.
Each fellow receives a fixed stipend of €5,000, which is meant to cover any tax or social security costs. Support for travel and accommodation is available case by case. The work includes interviews, data analysis and a final report, and fellows are lead authors of a case report.
Applicants need a master's degree. Experience in the field helps, but an academic track record is not required. The call is open to people from academia, journalism, civil society, public institutions and companies. Fellows may bring their own AI project or be matched with one. Project partners named on the page include Greenpeace Germany and Economy for the Common Good.
Apply through the online form on the call page. Upload one combined file with a CV of up to four pages, a motivation letter of up to two pages and, if you bring a project, a project description of up to two pages.
Optional online information sessions take place on 10 November 2026 at 10 am and 17 November 2026 at 3 pm. The deadline is 15 January 2027. A mandatory online preparation session follows on 11 May 2027, and the fellowship runs from 16 August to 22 October 2027. Weeks one and seven are in person in Berlin; the other weeks are part time and remote. HIIG looks for a strong interest in research, the ability to apply a complex method carefully, interest in interdisciplinary work and the ability to work independently.
