FOSS United grants for open source projects in India
FOSS United gives grants of up to ₹15 lakh to open source projects and maintainers in India. Applications are open all year.
FOSS United grants fund free and open source creators, maintainers, projects and events across India. The foundation says it has paid out over INR 3 crores so far.
Project grants are largely non thematic. Past grants went to developer tools, consumer apps, FOSS mirrors, open hardware and programming languages. The highest possible grant is ₹15 lakh. Typical grants are ₹3 to 7 lakh, paid over a year, and infrastructure grants are under ₹3 lakh. Grants are one time, and a project can come back for a follow on grant.
The program is for projects of Indian origin, with maintainers mostly based in India. FOSS United does not fund ideas or project proposals. It funds existing work.
Reviewers ask where the project comes from, who is behind it, how many people use it and what impact it has, what alternatives exist, and whether it can be sustainable in five years. Event grants are more selective and need a clear FOSS focus.
To apply, fill in the form on the FOSS United site and list the project in the FOSS United grants directory with a funding manifest. Applications are open all year. The most recent project grant was announced on August 10, 2026.
