OpenAI Codex for Open Source programme

OpenAI gives open source maintainers six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex and up to $25,000 in API credits from a $1 million fund. Applications are reviewed all year.

Codex for Open Source is an OpenAI programme for people who maintain open source projects. It offers three things: six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex for everyday coding, triage, review and maintainer work, conditional access to Codex Security for repositories that need deeper security coverage, and API credits from the Codex Open Source Fund.

The fund holds $1 million and pays the API costs of projects that put Codex into pull request review, maintainer automation or release workflows. Grants go up to $25,000 in API credits per project.

OpenAI asks applicants to be a core maintainer or to run a widely used public project. It says it also welcomes people from projects that play an important part in the ecosystem, even when they do not match the usual criteria. Selection looks at how much the project is used, how important it is to the ecosystem, whether it is actively maintained, and whether the applicant really is a maintainer.

Applications go through a form on the OpenAI site and are reviewed on an ongoing basis. There is no deadline on the page. The programme was announced in March 2026 and maintainers were still posting about it in September 2026.
