Alpha-Omega gives grants to open source projects that want to improve their security. Grant sizes vary with what a proposal needs, and the organizer says typical amounts run between $50,000 and $100,000 USD. Alpha-Omega describes its mission as protecting society by improving the security of critical open source software through direct work with maintainers and expert analysis.
Applications run on a quarterly cycle. The intake form opens in the first month of each quarter: January, April, July and October. The fourth quarter window of 2026 runs from October 1 to October 31.
Eligible projects include standalone projects, foundations that cover many projects, and core ecosystem services. Every project must use a license approved by the Open Source Initiative.
The process has two phases. In phase one you fill in a short intake form during the first month of the quarter. In phase two, during the second month, selected projects get a security consultation invitation and work with the Alpha-Omega team to write a formal proposal and a statement of work.
