IAIFI Fellowship 2027 to 2030 at MIT

The IAIFI Fellowship is a three year postdoctoral fellowship at the NSF Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions. IAIFI is a joint NSF funded institute of MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, Tufts and Boston University. It works on new AI methods that use ideas from fundamental physics, and on using AI for physics discoveries.

Fellows are paid by MIT. The posting gives a salary range of $71,000 to $90,000, and says the fellow rate is currently around 15% higher than the minimum MIT postdoc salary. All fellows get work space at MIT and can also have space at the other IAIFI universities. IAIFI expects to hire 1 to 4 fellows each year.

You can apply if you have, or expect to receive by September 1, 2027, a PhD in physics, astrophysics, statistics, computer science or a related field. Fellows choose their own research focus and work with two mentors, one from physics and one from AI. If your background is only in one of the two fields, your proposed research should still connect them. Fellows are expected to work mainly in the Boston area.

Shortlisted candidates hear back between mid November and mid December and have one online interview. Offers go out from late December to early January, and the decision deadline is February 14, 2027. The expected start date is September 1, 2027.
