BSSw Fellowship Program 2027

Up to $25,000 for a person who improves scientific software through a workshop, tutorial or community project. Applicants need a U.S. institution. Deadline October 30, 2026.

The BSSw Fellowship Program 2027 is open for applications. Better Scientific Software (BSSw) gives recognition and funding to people who lead and advocate for high quality scientific software. Each 2027 fellow receives up to $25,000 for an activity that promotes better scientific software.

The activity must produce a publicly available artifact. Examples given by the organizer are organizing a workshop, preparing a tutorial, or creating content that engages the scientific software community. Funds go through the fellow's institution for one year. The performance period runs from April 1, 2027 to April 30, 2028.

Applicants at all career stages are encouraged to apply, from students to senior professionals. Applicants must be affiliated with a U.S. based institution that is able to receive federal funding. This typically means U.S. government labs, universities and U.S. based companies. Fellows are also asked to take part as alumni in later years and help select future fellows.

Applications go through an online form. The organizer asks for a CV of at most two pages, a description of relevant experience, a project proposal with its technical impact and community impact, and a letter of recommendation from a supervisor.

A webinar with questions and answers takes place on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm EDT. The application deadline is Friday, October 30, 2026, before midnight PDT. The organizer states that the deadline is firm and will not be extended. Selected fellows are announced in January 2027. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.
