OpenAI AI and teen development research grants
OpenAI offers research grants of up to $1 million on generative AI and teens. Apply by October 6, 2026.
OpenAI is funding independent research on how generative AI affects young people ages 13 to 17. Individual grants are up to $1 million, and the program totals up to $5 million. OpenAI Group PBC funds and administers the grants.
The work can be qualitative, quantitative, experimental, observational, theoretical, participatory, or mixed methods. Topics include how teens use generative AI, effects on social and emotional development, and safeguards and design choices. Proposals from any country are welcome. OpenAI says it will prioritize countries with significant AI adoption.
Applicants must be 18 or older. They need an affiliation with a research institution or organization, or significant experience in child or adolescent development, well being, human computer interaction, AI impacts, or a close field. Organizations that operate for profit are not prioritized. At most 10 percent of a grant can go to overhead.
Applications are in English and go through the OpenAI SurveyMonkey Apply portal. The portal opened on September 8, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. PDT. The deadline is October 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Each funded project sends a final report. OpenAI also asks for an interim update in the first quarter of 2027, and prefers a working draft within 12 months of receiving funds. Research that involves minors must explain ethics review, consent, privacy, and how the team will respond to disclosures of harm.
