The Foresight Institute AI for Science and Safety Nodes request for proposals offers grant funding, office space, community and compute for open AI for science and safety projects. The application deadline is October 31, 2026 at 23:59 PDT.
Typical grants range between $30,000 and $100,000, and larger amounts are possible for the right project. Smaller amounts go to the Human Empowerment and AI Insurance and Open Governance focus areas, and higher amounts to the rest. Grants are usually paid in one lump sum. Larger projects over several years may be paid in tranches.
The call spans three connected layers. Local Compute is about building compute that individuals or communities physically own and control. Coordination and Accountability covers how humans and AI systems can interact better and how independent institutions can assess AI risk. AI first Science covers bio, neuro and nano work such as automated nanotechnology and whole brain emulation.
Individuals, teams and organizations can apply, both nonprofit and for profit. For profit applicants should explain why they need grant funding. Foresight strongly prioritizes applicants who want to be active, in person contributors at its hubs in San Francisco or Berlin. Selected projects can also get access to private compute clusters and workspace at the hubs.
Applications go through an online form linked from the RFP page. Review takes about three months after the deadline. Proposals are checked in house first and strong ones go to technical advisors. Foresight requires the work product of the funding, meaning code, data and outputs, to be open sourced. It says it prefers projects that use AI to automate workflows instead of large team budgets, with concrete milestones in the next one to three years.
